Whenever different metals are placed in a conductive liquid, such as salt water, you create a battery. If you connect these pieces of metal together, current will flow. This current, trying to equalize the conductivity of the metals, will be removing metal from one of the metal pieces. This removal is called "electrolysis". Electrolysis can eat away at propellers, shafts, thru hulls, fastenings, or any other part of your boat made of metal. To prevent this damage boat owners have installed Anodes at different points along the hull to prevent expensive repairs. Anodes are typically made of zinc but are also available in aluminum and magnesium. They should be replaced at regular intervals and inspected often. It is far easier and cheaper to replace anodes rather than repair electrolysis damage to the rest of the vessel.
